Our must-have mulberry silk pillowcase turns your everyday beauty routine into an indulgence.
The delicate fiber of your silk pillowcases can be machine washed, but only with great care, it is very important to use the most delicate program possible on your machine to preserve your silk pillowcase. Before inserting your silk pillowcase into the washing machine, it is recommended that you use a laundry bag to protect it. A setting on the wool or delicate cycle is strongly recommended to avoid damaging the silk pillowcase.Â
Â
In order to preserve your silk pillowcase, the water temperature should not exceed 30°. Silk pillowcases are very sensitive to heat and can deteriorate if the water temperature is not properly adjusted. Therefore, check your washing program carefully, as some gentle programs are set to 40°.Â
Â
That said, if you are apprehensive, or if you don't have a washing machine with the delicate or wool cycle option: you can always wash your silk pillowcase by hand. Hand washing will give your silk pillowcase a longer life than machine washing. However, avoid wringing, rubbing, or soaking your silk for more than an hour. Rinse with lukewarm water containing a few drops of spirit vinegar.Â
Â
Regarding the detergent to use, it is recommended to use a silk detergent that does not contain bleach or dyes, or a special liquid detergent for delicate textiles with a neutral pH so as not to damage the silk. However, you should never wash the silk pillowcase with a washing powder, and the use of bleach is strictly forbidden.
Â
DRYING
After washing, you should lay your silk pillowcase flat on a dry towel or hang it on a drying rack or line without a clothes peg to dry. However, it is not advisable to dry silk in the tumble dryer, despite certain tolerances on the gentle program. Your silk will quickly dry flat, it will only take one or two hours maximum, and the tumble dryer will only damage your silk pillowcase. It is also forbidden to dry your pillowcase in the sun or on a radiator to make it dry faster, as this will destroy the silk.Â
Â
THE REPEAT
You can iron your silk pillowcase, taking a few precautions to preserve the silk: you should never use a steam iron, iron at a low temperature starting from the reverse side without prolonged pressure on the seams and if possible while the silk is still wet to avoid damaging it. Finally, if necessary, finish with a quick and light ironing on the inside.
Â
Â
Silk pillowcases are a quality choice, full of benefits for general health and well-being. Indeed, silk is considerably rich in enzymes, proteins and amino acids, making the material an ideal accompaniment for various beauty treatments. We are all more or less familiar with all the advantages and benefits of silk as a natural skin care product, but what about the disadvantages? Although there are fewer of them, there are also disadvantages to the misuse of silk, so here is everything you need to know about silk pillowcases.Â
Â
The vast majority of the population favours cotton pillowcases because of their ubiquity on the market and their low price, without taking into account the fact that they unfortunately do not take into account the delicacy of the skin of the face. The roughness of cotton anticipates the ageing of facial skin. Silk, on the other hand, is as soft as it is smooth. The natural proteins and 18 amino acids in silk prevent the appearance of sleep folds and thus limit wrinkles. This is due to the natural support it provides to the skin: the metabolism of the skin cells remains well stimulated, until it can limit the signs of ageing. Especially during the night, when the skin regenerates twice as fast as during the day.Â
The silk pillowcase comes into play, making the sleep folds less noticeable when you wake up, as your skin will be resting on a softer fabric. Otherwise, these folds become real wrinkles as the years go by. Since people spend a third of their lives lying in bed with their head in direct contact with the pillowcase, the skin is in constant contact with the skin. The skin is thus in constant contact with the pillowcase for up to 8 hours a night, 8 hours when the skin is irritated and creased by the pillow fabric on which it rests. Thus, with age, the skin of the face quickly becomes as damaged as it is wrinkled. A pillowcase made from natural mulberry silk is ideal for alleviating these problems because it is very soft and less abrasive than cotton and therefore acts as an anti-ageing agent. Well made, this type of pillowcase can limit these sleep folds, while relaxing the skin. The skin glides over it, without any friction that could weaken it.
Â
SILK: HYPOALLERGENIC AND SILKY, IDEAL FOR THE SKIN
Cotton can absorb 30% of its weight in liquid, whereas silk can only act on 11%, so the dehydration of the epidermis is much less than with cotton. The silk pillowcase will therefore preserve the skin's natural hydration, its silky texture, derived from the natural components of silk, takes care of the skin, maintaining the harmony in the natural moisture regulation mechanisms, essential to the skin's health. Dust, as well as harmful allergens, cannot settle on the silk fibres. When silk is woven properly, there are no gaps between the threads, so that these impurities have no place to settle. Silk is also a hygienic material: the silk pillowcase helps the skin to breathe and rest ideally. There are also enzymes that counteract skin imperfections, such as acne or eczema. The antibacterial capacity of silk is recognised, appreciated and even recommended. For the simple well-being of the skin or to take care of more sensitive or irritated skin, using silk pillowcases is as effective as it is soothing.
Â
SILK: THE BEST ALLY FOR ALL HAIR TYPES
If silk preserves the skin, its softness and fineness can also contribute to the well-being of the hair. Sleeping on rough cloth makes hair brittle and tangled, whereas sleeping on a mulberry silk pillowcase allows hair to slide easily with the movements of the head, without rubbing and damaging it. On the contrary, it becomes less tangled, avoiding knots and split ends thanks to sericin and fibroin, but silk also prevents hair loss. This is followed by silk's ability to prevent static electricity in the hair, keeping it silky, even when you wake up! The silk pillowcase can maintain the natural moisture of the hair fibres, while letting them absorb the products for its sole care. Thus, the natural texture of silk protects the health and natural beauty of the hair.
Â
BUT STILL...
As silk does not retain impurities, it cannot absorb other products. Unlike cotton, which allows various skin and hair care products to penetrate, the texture of silk prevents them from seeping into the pillow. Opting for a silk pillowcase is therefore the perfect solution for skin and hair care and treatments to be much more effective.
And did you know that silk is a natural heat regulator? It becomes cool when it is hot, and vice versa when it is cold. This means that the body temperature is always in balance! The silk pillowcase is suitable for people who are sensitive to hot flushes or similar. It goes without saying that its silky texture calms the nervous system and helps the individual to de-stress easily and pleasantly. It must be acknowledged that silk, in addition to its whimsical and luxurious reputation, remains a real gift of nature for the daily comfort and well-being of human beings. Its quality makes it a royal fabric, and its durability is obvious.
Â
THE PRICE OF SILK: AN INCONVENIENCE?
Natural silk, because of its unrivalled quality and precious nature, is expensive enough. If cotton and nylon are within the reach of everyone, acquiring silk products is not cheap. In reality, this silky texture is as elegant as it is difficult to work with, and to care for it requires technical skill and delicacy. Otherwise, the silk pillowcase can lose its potential and beauty. However, if treated correctly, silk will perform and look beautiful for many years. The natural textile fibre silk is of recognised rarity and therefore sufficiently expensive. This is due to its exceptional quality: as strong as steel wire and as beautiful as the finery of a king. It should also be emphasised that its high price is due to the exceptional techniques required to produce the silky fabric. This starts with the rearing of the silkworms or "sericulture", passing through the preparation of the cocoons, the spinning and milling, and finally, the weaving itself. Each stage has its own sub-stages, such as decoating and smothering, and all this work is very precise. Therefore, buying a silk pillowcase may be a luxury, but it is well worth the price, as silk is a timeless material, a natural and beneficial care in every way.
MAINTENANCE OF THE SILK PILLOWCASE: A WORTHWHILE INCONVENIENCE
The care of a silk pillowcase is not a task to be minimised. On a day-to-day basis, it is considerably more difficult to treat than other fabrics, which can be a disadvantage, but when properly cared for, silk remains as sumptuous as it was when it was first made, and can last for a very long time. In order for this silky, delicate fabric to retain its beauty and, above all, its assets, it is important to consider the dos and don'ts. Silk is one of the strongest natural fibres, but it loses up to 20% of its strength when wet. Therefore, it is important to use the machine wash for delicate fabrics at a low temperature. Spinning is not recommended because of the fragility of silk. It is best to dry the silk pillowcase in the open air and especially in the shade. The sun's rays can weaken the silk fabric and cause it to fade. For manual washing, which is the ideal option, cold water and a simple mild soap or a special silk detergent are recommended. Please note that it is forbidden to rub (spin or twist) a silk pillowcase, to leave it to soak for more than five minutes, or to use bleaching or pre-washing products on it. Indeed, silk fabric is far from being elastic. If it is stretched, even a little, it remains permanently stretched. Dry cleaning may be appropriate. For ironing: always work at a low temperature and only on the back of the fabric. It is essential to iron the silk pillowcase when it is still a little damp, or if it is already dry, slightly dampening it may be sufficient.
Â
TO KNOW
Silk discolours easily when it comes into contact with other liquid substances such as perfumes, deodorants or alcoholic drinks. It retains perspiration stains and can easily turn yellow over time. Although it is tough against mineral acids, it cannot withstand sulphuric acid, which can dissolve it completely on contact.
Moths are also a real danger for mulberry silk pillowcases, as they devour them greedily, especially when the silk is not very clean. To avoid irreversible damage, make sure that the place where the silk rests is dry. To keep moths away, a sachet of lavender can be useful. Simply place it under the pillow, for example.
Another thing to be aware of is that even natural-looking silk may have been mixed with viscose or polyester, among others. Since many different types of fibre can be woven together when weaving silk, it can be difficult to tell if it is a real silk fabric. However, synthetic silk does not have the natural benefits that pure silk can provide, although it is less fragile. The virtues of natural silk make the silk pillowcase a quality product: always bright and soft. The weft can also distinguish real silk from fake. It is important to remember that pure silk has only the best wefts.
